Certainly, teaching little cares to share is one of the most difficult tasks. Children who are only two or three should not be expected to share well, and they have to be taught to do so. This is certainly not an innate undertaking.

There are a few things that you should know about how children this young interact with their toys. First of all, they have pride in their ownership which is very important. They will decide on a favorite item or two and will grow attached to it. This is good for their sense of self esteem and you can teach them how to take care of their possessions and take pride in what they have.

You need to respect their choices and their possessions. This ownership helps your children to know that they have control over certain aspects of their lives and that their choices matter.

It is important, however, that they learn to share at times. Children at this age usually engage in solitary play or parallel play. This means that they rarely actually play with other children; rather they play parallel to other kids. You can help to model good behavior with sharing and to help your child to make the choice to share. For instance, if two kids want the same toy, you can help your child to learn to let the other kid play with it, or you can set a timer and each child will know that his turn is coming up.

Eventually, children will learn to share. When they are two or three, it can be more important for them to understand that they have their own private space and their own ability to decide what they want to play with on their own.
